I love ice cream. I always have. I present this evidence for your consideration:
Twenty years later, not much has changed. I do make a habit of wearing more clothes and less ice cream these days, but I’m still just as giddy to get my hands on a pink Baskin Robbins spoon.
The problem is that I can’t keep ice cream in the house. I just don’t have the willpower — a pint will be gone in under 48 hours. I can resist dozens of chocolate bars, bags of candy, and boxes of cookies… but ice cream? I inhale the stuff. I’ve wished and searched for single serving containers, but the only ones I’ve found come in packs of six or a dozen. That’s not going to help.
Then, a couple months ago, I saw something in the frozen food section that stopped me dead in my tracks. Individual, single servings packages of Ben & Jerry’s. And next to it? Single servings of Haagen Dazs. Cue the beam of light and choir of angels.
Each container comes with it’s own miniature spoon, enabling you to wolf down your ice cream any time or place. The Haagen Dazs spoon is flat and paddle-like, and stored inside the container underneath the lid. The Ben & Jerry’s spoon is more spoon-like and stored underneath a flap on the outer part of the lid. Both are suitable vehicles for getting the ice cream to my mouth, and I don’t really have a preference. The spoons are an especially nice touch because for ice cream, I find plastic spoons to be preferable to the metal spoons I have at home — they don’t conduct the cold.
The ice cream is great, but I don’t intend to review it. It’s the packaging I’m interested in, and that gets a 10!
According to their website, Ben & Jerry’s fare comes in five flavors: Cherry Garcia, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Cookie Dough, Strawberry Cheesecake, and Vanilla. As for Haagen Dazs, I’ve seen Vanilla and Chocolate, but I think Coffee and Dulce de Leche minis also exist. Their website isn’t as informative.
Nutrition Breakdown: Ben & Jerry’s Cookie Dough has 220 calories, 12g of fat (9g saturated), 21g of sugar, and 3g of protein per 3.6 oz container. Haagen Dazs Vanilla has 260 calories, 17g of fat (10g saturated), 19g of sugar, and 5g of protein per 4 oz container.

I saw the Haagen Dazs the last time I was at the supermarket. I agree, it’s genius. That same day I bought 2 pints of Leonardo’s Gelato. Shared one and ate the other one in 2 sittings. I won’t be buying anything but the single servings from now on!

I find the spoons on these oddly inadequate though. They don’t have enough scoop to them.
